AIS 140: AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY STANDARD 140
What is AIS 140?
Automotive Industry Standard 140 (AIS 140) is a regulation for Intelligent Transport Systems(ITS) published by the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India).
It basically defines the Safety and Security feature requirement for all public transport vehicles that require a permit. It defines that all such vehicles must be fitted with GPS tracking devices specifically for Vehicle Location Tracking and with the function of a mandatory Emergency Button also known as panic button or SOS button.
The AIS 140 regulation, applicable from April 1, 2018, mandates a vehicle tracking device and one or more emergency button(s) in all public service vehicles that require permit. The mandate is applicable for both existing and new vehicles.
For a device to be AIS 140 certified, there are many specifications that it needs to adhere to and meet. Below are a few important ones:
- Location tracking through Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS/NavIC)
- Communicate to designated backend government servers with PVT data
- Dual IP addresses for PVT data and Emergency response
- Alert ID on pressing emergency button
- 4 hour internal battery back-up
- Unique ID or IMEI number
- Register vehicle to device
- E-SIM
- Operate between 8VDC to 32VDC
- Assisted GPS
- 3 axis accelerometer and gyroscope
- Multi-slot GPRS
